In Ladies of Eola High Seas, we take a look at three sisters, Ruby, Pearl, and Opal, in their second play by Michael Wanzie. Ruby and her husband Robert are on an unsuccessful honeymoon in Atlanta when Robert surprises Ruby; the next leg of their trip will be a on a cruise! Meanwhile, highly successful Mary Kay consultant Opal, has won a cruise and decides to take Pearl—the sage burning, meditation expert—with her. In a surprising turn of luck, all three sisters (and Robert) end up on the same Disney cruise. Robert has his head buried in a notebook all honeymoon, and on the cruise, we find out that he is secretly writing a novel about the “Ladies of Eola Heights,” and has a deal with a publisher. He is stealing stories from the sisters’ lives without their consent. The sisters are irate, not to mention that no one (but Robert) is enjoying the all-kids vacation on this Disney cruise. In a turn of events, Robert is taken into jail onboard the ship for having “molested” a teenager at the pool. Ruby then recalls a story of her husband Robert having “touched” a 15-year-old-girl during a therapy session as a psychiatrist. Until this day, she had dismissed the allegations. Tensions are high, divorce is on the horizon, and finally, the allegations are dropped, and all four leave their separate ways, wondering if family and loved ones are supposed to stay close, or tear each other apart.
